More Weekend Recap

Last Friday night a few of us decided we had enough energy to venture out and explore. Here I am with my roommates, M and J, ready to go out! These girls are great and I love our dinners together where we talk so long over wine that we are then too tired to do homework. Our first stop was Carnivore, one of the most famous restaurants in Kenya. I got to eat ostrich! It was good too--sort of like sausage. However, dancing was a bust because a private event meant that there was no music. So we went somewhere else. Unfortunately dancing here usually doesn't even get started in most Kenyan joints until after midnight--I tire out just when things get going! But we did hold out long enough to experience a Conga line which was hilarious.

Our group gatherings often involve card games of some sort. Including our batman Uno!

Here are some pictures from the Ngesha Art Festival. These acrobats were amazing. Cirque de Solei has got nothing on them! Plus check out their outfits! :) A number of highschool groups performed, like these girls. The guy below did a very entertaining dance--I would describe it as "bounding." The artist group is very involved in their community. They have painted a number of murals that share public health messages including HIV/AIDS. As part of my UW program, I am required to engage in a human rights project and I am thinking of doing something with these artists. I was so impressed with them and am fascinated by the intersection of art/creativity/expression in communicating human rights messages. I feel that the human rights movement overlooks the arts as a powerful medium for furthering their work. We'll see......

Some more pictures of the Ngong Hills hike. The dirt here is red! I know certain people who are very fond of red dirt/rocks.

I'll leave you with my favorite news headline for today: "Fear as baboons invade kitchens"
