Ode to Kristine....and Contra Dancing

Kristine was the first of the IJM Spring 07 Interns to go. She flew back to CA the day after our internship ended. She unfortunately did not foresee the occurrence of intern Spring Break Week when she booked her flight way back when.

This is Kristine proudly displaying her "New Dancer" button during our night out Contra Dancing. With her innate abilities, however, no one would have ever guessed that she was a new dancer.

This is the entire IJM crew that went out Contra Dancing. What exactly is Contra Dancing? Well it is kind of like fancy square dancing. A little like the dancing you would see in Pride and Prejudice. Although I have a hard time believing that Pride and Prejudice Dancers would have sweated the amount we did! (Just look at my hair in the pic and you would have think I had just majorly worked out!) With a huge live band including instruments such as a washboard and spoons, along with 300 dancers, it was an enjoyable night!

Many dancers wore skirts, both men and women alike. The men who wore skirts usually had full on beards too. There were a number of going on elderly men, who tended to be short, bald, pot-bellied, and wearing sweatpants up to their armpits. I had one such partner who was half my height and I do think I wore him out by the end of the dance. lol. About halfway through the dance he could not handle any more of my twirling.

And boy did I twirl! In fact, I was spun with such vigour that I had to make sure to control my skirt. I felt like I was four again when my favorite activity was to spin in my favorite dress as fast as I could in order to make my skirt twirl as much as possible.
